2006-2007 Annual Report Stéphane Brutus, Ph.D., Chair Throughout the year, CSIOP continued its efforts to communicate widely with its membership as well as with the general public and organizations in the public and private sectors. The membership of CSIOP is stable, with approximately 300 full, student, and associate members. This year, the website was redesigned in order for it to be more informative for members. After much discussion among the executive and with CSIOP members, two motions are being put forward. The first one concerns the endorsement of the most recent SIOP principles for the validation and use of personnel selection procedures (4th Edition, 2003). The issue of the void that exist in terms of selection standards in Canada was first raised by Dr. Vic Catano at the 2006 AGM in Calgary. According to our by-laws CSIOP can issue policy statements: “The Society shall represent the interest of the Society as members of a section of CPA through initiating such activities as position papers, policy statements, and special meetings […] (CSIOP by-laws II.3.ix)”. Currently, CSIOP does not have any formal position as to the use of psychological tests in personnel selection. The only guidelines available to I-O psychologists practicing in Canada are those offered by CPA (i.e., the more general APA Standards). The motion reads: “That CSIOP formally endorses the Principles for the Validation and Use of Personnel Selection Procedures (4th ed.). CSIOP recommends that the principles be used in conjunction with Canadian Human Rights Legislation and Canadian Employment Legislation.” The second motion is related to a membership fee increase. The main revenue stream of CSIOP comes from membership dues and, for as long as anyone on the executive can remember, CSIOP membership fees have never been raised. The yearly executive meeting and the CSIOP invited speakers (i.e., travel and conference fees) at the annual CPA conference represent the main expenses for CSIOP and the cost for these initiatives has been steadily increasing every year. Moreover, per new government regulations, CPA now retains a small percentage of CSIOP’s membership dues for administrative costs, which represents a slight reduction in revenues for CSIOP. This situation has prompted the Executive to look for ways to balance CSIOP’s revenues with required expenses. This proposed increase in membership would lead to an approximate increase of $1,000 in revenues for CSIOP. The motion reads: “1. That the membership fees for full members be increased from $18.00 to $23.00. 2. That the membership fee for associate members be increased from $35.00 to $40.00.” In February 2007, the CSIOP executive held its Long Range Planning meeting at Concordia University.
