Creating Trans-Inclusive Workplaces

Abstract: Research on LGBT inclusivity at work is scant - but this is particularly true when it comes to research focused on trans populations in organizations. This is especially problematic, given trans employees are frequently mistreated in organizations. However, more recently, scholars have begun to turn their attention to the importance of creating trans inclusive workspaces. In this talk, I will review some of my recent research examining the workplace experiences of trans employees (e.g., discrimination toward trans employees, outcomes associated with discrimination toward trans employees, and strategies for buffering discrimination-related outcomes). I will then discuss new qualitative and quantitative research which shifts the conversation toward allies of trans employees. Namely, I will discuss what majority group members can do to promote greater trans inclusivity at work, as defined by trans employees themselves.
